Apple has released a shockingly complete archive of old Mac and iPhone wallpapers, spanning back to the early days of the company. The archive includes more than 12,000 high-resolution images, and is available for download free of charge from the Apple website. The archive is particularly valuable to collectors and historians interested in Apple’s early design aesthetic. “It’s amazing how much design evolution has taken place over the years,” said Apple spokesperson Katie Cotton. “We hope that this collection will help people appreciate the history of Apple wallpaper.” The archive is also useful for anyone who wants to create their own retro-inspired desktop or mobile backgrounds. “There are so many great options for creating unique wallpapers using this archive,” said Cotton. “People can use it to create something totally unique for their own computer or phone.” The collection includes both traditional landscape and portrait images, as well as abstract designs inspired by modern art movements like minimalism and post-modernism. Many of the images feature iconic scenes from popular movies or TV shows, such as The Matrix or Star Wars. Apple has been releasing new collections of vintage Mac and iPhone wallpapers every few months since 2014. The latest collection includes images from throughout Apple’s history, dating back to 1984 when the original Macintosh was released. ..

Love or hate Apple, you’ve got to admit: their background images are consistently stunning. Now you can download all of them.

A enterprising Reddit user posted the archive of wallpapers this week, and it’s extensive, including not only the default wallpapers but also the other images Apple has offered over the years. The iPhone collection goes back to the very beginning, while the Mac collection goes beyond the early days of OS X to include wallpapers from OS9 and earlier.

It’s a great way for Mac and iPhone users to find some something nostalgic, but even Windows and Android users will find something they like here. I promise.
